Responsible innovation for international development

Abeera Akhtar

Episode Summary:

In this BetterTech episode, Abeera Akhtar, GBV Tech Products Manager at UNICEF talks about why responsible innovation is important and why non-profit organizations should reinvent their organizational systems, including their cultures, identities, competencies and processes while developing internationally.

Show Notes:

1. Responsible innovation is about building something that will have an impact on people and it matters because these days big platforms build without thinking about what ways their products can be misused. So, it’s important to look at all the impacts and be cautious about them.

2. From an international development perspective, it’s important to realize that most of the time you have to deal with vulnerable populations. Consider building products that are accessible for them and can actually benefit them.

3. Organizations can operationalize RI in the nonprofit world by understanding & evaluating the audience, the challenges they might have to face and the value that your product will be providing them. Think through for their security and lastly the accessibility of your products.

4. Sometimes you have to respond quickly to geopolitical aspects. Connectivity is one of the biggest challenges in such areas and data connection in emerging markets is very low as we go deeper. While providing technological products, you need to consider this aspect.

This episode is hosted by Amna Omer, Global Communications Manager, Tkxel.
